USAT Willard Bay Triathlon - June 4, 2011

We still have around 25 spots open for the Willard Bay Triathlon this weekend! The weather is forecasted to be sunny with a high of 75 degrees that day so no one should be afraid of the Utah Spring weather. We are again working with the fantastic kids of Island View Teen Center in Clearfield. They are great volunteers and we are making a donation in their behalf.

From race day unique swim caps to free technical shirts there are many additional amenities to our Gold Medal Racing Championship Series like the Willard Bay Triathlon. The course is beautiful. The swim is out and back along a dike so those of you who are Aquaphobic (afraid of swimming, not actual definition) you can swim to the dike and hold on if you do not feel you will finish. By having the dike there it helps pyschologically for many first open water swimmers. The Bike Course is a loop around the small rural town of Plain City. The Run is our favorite with an out and back on the dike so the lake is always on your shoulder. Also we have mosquito abatement treating the area two days prior to the race to help prevent bugs on the course. Some racers tell us they would enjoy extra protein without the treatment, but most would rather run without bugs. This is a great open water swim and a fun course. Registration is at http://www.willardbaytriathlon.com

- USAT Tri Clinic Report for May 27, 2011!!!

Our first annual free Sanctioned USAT TriClinic on Friday Night May 27, 2011 went extremely well. We capped out the free registrations at 45 participants. We started with an introduction and prizes. Everyone got a t-shirt from a past On Hill Events Race and a left over medal from Willard Bay Triathlon 2010. Lora Erickson aka "The Blonde Runner" www.blonderunner.com covered health, nutrition and running. After the first half hour we broke into smaller groups of 15 to go over Swimming, Biking, and Running. The Swim break, taught by Gordon Gridley with GSL Open Water, included an optional open water swim teaching the best techniques in rounding a buoy, swim techniques and much more. The bike clinic was run by Ian Shockley with Bike Fix in Bountiful http://www.bikefixutah.com. His tips were extremely helpful. The water in Willard Bay was 63.5 degrees and it was a beautiful evening. We plan to send out a full PDF of the days tips to all those that participated so they can practice what they learned. Here are some quotes and photos from the TriClinic:

Very helpful, especially the open water swim and transitioning out of the wetsuit for the bike ride. - Gordon Wright

Great job putting on the clinic.  The presenters were very insightful and it was a great idea to finish it off with the mini triathlon.  I look forward to future clinics and triathlons. - Chad Coles

Thank you so much for putting this Tri Clinic together! I'm currently training for much first triathlon and it was great to get a feel for what the sport is about. I learned a lot of new things that I didn't know before I came to the clinic. It was great to get the opportunity to swim in open water. I had a blast! Thanks again! - Rachel Butterfield

Thank you for putting on the tri clinic. I appreciated what I learned, and it help me think of things to apply to my strategy for when I do my race. - Kaelyn Rhees

July = Aquatic Center Triathlons

Cache Valley Super Sprint Triathlon 7/9/2011 www.cvsst.com

Layton Triathlon 7/30/2011 www.laytontriathlon.com

July Represents our two aquatic center triathlons. The Cache Valley Super Sprint Triathlon is a fun sprint course in Logan. This race is limited to 250 participants and has sold out the last six years. The course is a fast flat course with the run in a park near a stream. The run and bike are both out and back but the views are worth seeing twice.

The Layton Triathlon is a unique race. Four distances: Sprint, Mini Sprint, Relay Sprint, and Kids Triathlon. The Sprint is a F1 Format or a repeating course. Swim 300 Yards, Bike 5.5 Miles, Run 1.55 then jump back into the water and repeat the entire course. Most racers love it because July 30 is usually around 95-105 degrees. The mini is doing the loop once and great for a first time triathlete who might be afraid of triathlons. The relay is just two people doing two mini triathlons. We feel that this is a great way for you experienced triathletes to get your friends into the sport by doing the first leg and cheering them on during the second. The kids triathlon is my favorite event. After the adult triathlon is completely over, around 11:00AM, we have the kids 11 and under do a Swim 100 Yards (4 lengths), Bike 1 Mile, and Run .44 Mile around the park. Parents are allowed to swim with their kids and run with them. Last year we had close to 100 kids including our staff kids having a great time. All kids get a finisher medal and t-shirt. Most kids that participated wore their shirts and medals all day in pride of their accomplishment.

Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon - 8/27/2011

The Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon is in its fifth year and we plan on this year being the best year ever. Last year the On Hill Events Staff had an adventure with a lightning, rain and wind storm all night prior to the race. It was fun for us to reset up a metal transition area at 4AM with lighting striking near us. This year the Brawl is working with local groups to help with doubling the size of volunteers to provide extra aid during the race.

The Bear Lake Brawl is one of the most beautiful races in the state with waters compared to the caribbean. If you are a triathlete and have not raced the brawl, you will be surprised what you are missing when you do it. This race fills quickly and we are already 50% full of the 700 cap for 2011. If you are planning on Brawling this year get your registration in so you do not miss it. http://www.bearlakebrawl.com

Legacy Midnight Run is Almost Full!!!

We have created this virtual meter that measures the capacity of the Legacy Midnight Run - Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K. To see the current capacity all you will have to do is refresh your screen. We are striving to increase the size from the 560 we had originally planned on but if we do we will have to work with a second bus company. This meter is also on the registration page for the Legacy Midnight Run. If you refer back this email it should in theory update automatically.

Here is a 10K race we are helping promote for the Blonde Runner:

Hi, my name is Lora Erickson aka Blonde Runner. In November 1997 I lost a little baby girl. Her name was Samantha. She was simply born too early and could not survive, living only five hours. Click here to read the complete story. When someone loses an baby or infant or suffers a miscarriage it can often be devastating for a person and/or couple to face. Everyone copes with grief differently but for many it is important to recognize that life did exist and even the short life matters.  This race will provide the opportunity to recognize the loss and support the grieving process as a community.  I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Lora
